Peripheral vascular disease is a common, disabling malady, and
patients seeking treatment may turn to their cardiologist for
advice and treatment. Conventional treatment has always been
medical management and, inevitably, surgical bypass, even
amputation. Stents have had a significantly high impact on
endoluminal treatment outcomes by preventing injury to the lumen,
reducing the potential for hyperplasia and restenosis, as well as
the likelihood of plaque disruption and embolization. This second
edition brings together a combination of all the current
evidence-based information with personal experience and is
presented by a team of distinguished operators.
This extensively revised edition examines renal pathophysiology and the rationale for renal denervation for the management of hypertension, as well as possible long-term benefits and risks of this therapy. Renal denervation is a minimally invasive, endovascular catheter-based procedure that makes use of radiofrequency ablation to treat resistant hypertension, with studies showing a high degree of effectiveness. The devices involved in the continued evolution of this therapy are discussed and the book incorporates analyses of the development of the technique while evaluating its cost effectiveness and future applications. Renal Denervation: A New Approach to Treatment of Resistant Hypertension describes the technique in detail, its advances and its pitfalls. While it has been estimated that 50% of Western civilization has hypertension and approximately 20% of patients have resistant hypertension, hypertension remains the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality thus strengthening arguments to consider a wider range of potential solutions to manage these patients.
This book discusses the different aspects of mitral regurgitation as well as diagnostic and imaging studies to evaluate the patients at risk. Treatment options for patients with mitral regurgitation are discussed including some of the new non-surgical treatments. Various medical devices and technologies have evolved recently making the traditional surgery not the only option in these patients. This book will be helpful to surgeons, cardiologists, as well as other clinicians and students interested in the diagnosis and treatment of mitral regurgitation.
As the nature of medical care becomes more preventive, rather than crisis-driven, the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral vascular disease become more relevant to everyday practice. Approximately two million patients in Europe and the United States suffer from critical limb ischemia. Nearly half of these sufferers will require major amputation within one year after the onset of limb ischemia. In addition, in the United States, prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm is quite significant. In 2002, 200,000 abdominal aortic aneurysms were diagnosed, adding to the estimated one and half million patients who currently experience this disease. In fact, 10% of men over 80 years of age, have significant abdominal aortic aneurysms. Furthermore, 20% of the patients who undergo coronary intervention have renal artery stenosis, with as many as 50% of those patients having critical stenosis. Embolic protection traditionally used for carotid intervention is now being applied in both femoral and renal applications. The field has also seen an explosion in the ability to screen patients with peripheral vascular disease, knowing that this is a potent predictor of comorbid cardiovascular disease. The second edition of the highly successful "Textbook of Peripheral Vascular Interventions" discusses therapies that can make a real difference in the lives of patients. Effective, less invasive approaches to therapies for critical limb ischemia, chronic total occlusions, as well as therapies for some subsets, are discussed by an illustrious team of international multispeciality contributors. "Textbook of Peripheral Vascular Interventions, Second Edition," is not only for cardiologists, but also forradiologists, endovascular surgeons, vascular surgeons, and cardiovascular surgeons becoming involved in these therapies.
